Small Groups of Veterans
For those that experience war trauma, relationships have deeper meaning and authenticity is key. The Veterans Administration (VA) addresses veteran issues in a systemic and programmatic way, as a bureaucracy must. It is a leading cause for why veterans dislike and avoid the VA. What gives our programs power as a charity is our flexibility to look at individuals as such, individuals, and not generalize the struggles they face. The larger the group, the less personable the experience. Our goal is to form genuine relationships and address the human elements within each veteran’s struggle. .
Mountaintop Experience
Authors Chip and Dan Heath, brothers who teach business strategy at the collegiate level, outlined an approach to making lasting impressions in their book The Power of Moments. They say, “Our lives are measured in moments, and defining moments are the ones that endure in our memories.” Similar lessons can be applied in the rehabilitation of veterans. By using one or more of the following elements defined by the Heath brothers: Elevation, Insight, Pride, and Connection; we create a longer lasting impact.
Structured Seminars
We create more than positive memories, we make behavior-changing impact in a short amount of time. We discuss past warrior cultures, historical literature, and mythical figures to compare the burdens of war from then to now, and use that historical context to learn how those cultures dealt with their returning warriors. By challenging the norms (norms that have sterilized war and its effects), we can inspire veterans to change their outlook on their life and role in society after war.
